At the beginning of the 19th century and coffee production in the Americas, two pioneers and entrepreneurs, Alejo C. Jiménez in Costa Rica and Wilhelm Kahle in southern Mexico shared the same dream, “To produce the best coffee in the world”. Today, the descendants of these visionary farmers still produce coffee within the same ideals of excellence that inspired Mr. Jiménez and Mr. Kahle.

With over 200 years of tradition in specialty coffee, Alejo Castro, a direct descendant of Alejo C. Jiménez believes that the best way to honor his ancestors is by producing and exporting only great coffee.

Alejo and Volcan Azul produce four different preparations of coffee, however this lot comes from their F.C.J. Volcan Azul, Grand Reserva line. These coffees come from a limited selection of exclusive micro- and nano-batches of coffee that carry unique and exotic qualities. This particular micro lot consists of 100% Caturra that was naturally processed.

For the Castro family, conservation is as important as producing some of the most desirable coffees in the world. They have been committed to protecting vast extensions of the Costa Rican tropical rainforest since the 80’s. The Castro family has come to acquire over 1,500 hectares of rainforest for ecological preservation in areas where they grow their coffee as well as in the Osa Peninsula, a region in the south of Costa Rica known for holding 2.5% of the Earth’s biodiversity.

Alejo is proud to know that his family is contributing to reducing the effects of global warming. This is the attitude towards the environment and commitment to sustainability in coffee and beyond are values that he would like to pass on to the future generations.
