Tsegay Hagos Tesfaye, the founder and owner of the Sasaba washing station, established his mill in the high mountains of the Kercha district of Guji. Working with over 500 smallholders in the surrounding area, many of whom's families have grown coffee for generations, Tsegay makes it a point to work with farmers who have proven that they consistently produce high-quality coffee. He believes in establishing a positive feedback loop with each farmer by paying them a higher premium for their coffee, providing training, and offering medical and financial support during the off season. In turn, both farmers and the mill benefit from better coffee and better sales. "Sasaba does not grow alone," Tsegay says. "We are by their side, whatever happens, and because of that, they are by ours."
